The Beginning
It began in the island named Yurumein today St. Vincent. Our leader Chief Joseph Chatoyer was a warrior that defended the Garinagu land with his soldiers. There is was a famous saying that was said by Barrauda one of Chief Joseph Chatoyer's wives. She said "If you don't want to fight for our lands I'll give you my skirt and I'll take your pant because I will fight". Later the strategy was used to confused the British. March 14, 1795 Chief Joseph Chatoyer was assassinated by the British and the Garinagu were later exiled on March 12, 1797. The Garinagus left Yurumein and settled in Roatan now part of Honduras on April 12, 1797
About Blogger
I am Alexa Norales and a senior at Park East High School. I live in the Bronx and an part of the huge Garifuna community on the Bronx. My parents were born on the coast of Honduras in a town called Triunfo de la Cruz and later migrated to the United States. Though I was born in the United States I do embrace my culture and customs. Many ask what is the Garifuna culture. Well this blog is just about that. It is about our history and our current struggle.
